Social Worker – Indigenous Health & Wellbeing
Location: Regional, QLD. 2.5 hours drive from Brisbane
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: Competitive + Salary Packaging + Great Work-Life Balance + Relocation allowance up to $5000
About the Organisation
A respected and innovative multidisciplinary health service is seeking a passionate and community-minded Social Worker to join their team in St George. With a strong reputation for providing culturally safe, patient-centred care, this organisation is committed to Closing the Gap and addressing the social determinants of health that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Role
This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a motivated Social Worker to contribute to a meaningful barber/counselling initiative. In addition to providing psychosocial support and case management, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be trained in barbering, using barber sessions as a culturally safe and trusted setting to build rapport, provide informal counselling, and promote mental wellbeing.
Working as part of a dynamic and culturally diverse team, you will:
  • Deliver psychosocial assessments, counselling, and case management
  • Build meaningful connections through informal “yarning while cutting” sessions
  • Engage clients-particularly young Indigenous men-through a trusted, culturally appropriate model of care
  • Advocate for clients and facilitate access to health and social services
  • Participate in community outreach and wellbeing events
  • Help develop innovative, culturally relevant approaches to mental health support
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a compassionate, flexible, and culturally aware professional who is excited by new ways of engaging with community, particularly through creative and grassroots programs.
Essential Criteria:
  • Bachelor of Social Work (or equivalent qualification)
  • Eligibility for registration with the AASW
  • Experience in mental health, youth work, or community services
  • Strong communication, counselling, and advocacy skills
  • Blue Card (Working with Children Check)
  • National Police Clearance (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable:
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Interest in youth engagement, mental health, and social innovation
  • Willingness to undergo training in barbering to support therapeutic engagement
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Driver’s Licence
