The Role
An exciting opportunity is available for a Male Counsellor to join a multidisciplinary team delivering culturally safe support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.
This unique role integrates counselling with participation in the “Yarn and Cut” program, using barbering as a culturally engaging platform to build trust and facilitate conversations around social and emotional wellbeing. Full barber training will be provided.
You will work closely with clients experiencing trauma, mental health challenges, and complex social issues, delivering person-centred, trauma-informed care in both clinical and community settings.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Delivering culturally appropriate, trauma-informed counselling to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men
- Building strong therapeutic relationships through informal and structured engagement (including “Yarn and Cut”)
- Providing case management and coordinating care for clients with complex needs
- Supporting clients to access health, social, and community services
- Participating in outreach and community engagement activities
- Maintaining accurate and compliant case notes and documentation
- Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Contributing to Closing the Gap outcomes through culturally responsive practice

What We’re Looking For
- Tertiary qualification (minimum Certificate IV or above) in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (highly regarded)
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and social and emotional wellbeing
- Ability to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men in a culturally safe and respectful manner
- Interest in innovative service delivery models and community-based engagement
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and within a team
Essential Requirements
- Male Identified (genuine occupational requirement)
- Current driver’s licence
- Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain)
- National Police Check (or ability to obtain)
